Master Synthesis

This synthesis consolidates the five Consullo Seed AI theses without extending their claims. It imports definitions, invariants, dependency contracts, substrate boundaries, evidence-ledger schema, thesis benchmark designs, Thesis 5 operational contracts, formal sketches, literature constraints, and risk vocabulary from 00-vocabulary-and-invariants.md, 00-cross-thesis-dependency-map.md, appendix-substrates.md, appendix-evidence-ledger-schema.md, appendix-thesis-1-improvement-loop-benchmarks.md, appendix-thesis-2-cognitive-workflow-benchmarks.md, appendix-thesis-3-causal-decision-benchmarks.md, appendix-thesis-4-software-substrate-benchmarks.md, appendix-thesis-5-alignment-benchmarks.md, appendix-thesis-5-operational-contracts.md, appendix-formal-models.md, appendix-literature-grounding.md, and risks-and-criticisms.md. Terms such as improvement, agent, capability, method memory, AAF, ADO, scoped trust, deployment stage, high-stakes action, evidence-ledger views, and Capability Status are used under those control-file definitions. The implementation-evidence appendix is excluded pending owner re-verification and supplies no status evidence here.

Consolidated Claim

Consullo Seed AI is best framed as a specified/proposed scaffold for governed recursive capability amplification. It is not a present claim of reached ASI, solved alignment, guaranteed corrigibility, or general superintelligence. The defensible claim is narrower and more useful: Consullo's designs can be organized into an architecture where agents, code, method memories, causal models, validators, tests, prompts, trust estimates, and governance procedures become explicit objects of staged improvement.

That claim is ambitious because the improvement target includes parts of the improvement machinery itself. It is bounded because every capability claim must carry Capability Status, evidence limits, benchmark scope, cost/benefit accounting, provenance, and failure conditions. Most suite-level capability claims remain specified/proposed until component implementation and benchmark evidence establish otherwise.

Dependency Topology

The five theses form a capability-flow architecture plus a constraint wrapper. Thesis 2, A Multi-Agent Cognitive Substrate For Capability Amplification, supplies memory, reasoning, attention, perception, metacognition, creativity, theory-of-mind primitives, and executive control. Thesis 3, Causal-Decision Foundations For Bounded Strategic Reasoning, supplies causal models, counterfactuals, robust intervention choice, calibration, Goodhart analysis, experiment portfolios, abstention, and escalation. Thesis 4, A Self-Modifying Software Substrate With Acceptance Gates, supplies agent construction, code generation, repair, tests, semantic checks, provenance, and staged deployment. These capabilities feed Thesis 1, The Validated Improvement Loop And Its Invariants, which proposes, evaluates, validates, deploys, monitors, rolls back, and records changes.

Thesis 5, Alignment Invariants And Scoped Trust Under Recursive Modification, wraps all four capability theses and the substrate context. It constrains actions through the AAF gate, scoped permission, trust estimates, constitutional authority, containment, rollback, interruptability, incident response, ADO reporting, evidence-ledger preservation, and human authority. Thesis 5 is not downstream of recursive improvement; it is a condition under which recursive improvement may proceed.

The three load-bearing alignment roles named across the suite are Friendship, AdversarialAlignmentOrchestrator, and AbundanceDistributionMonitor; their design-level behavioral contracts are specified in appendix-thesis-5-operational-contracts.md.

Substrate context remains outside the five theses. Specialized LLM routing, rapid knowledge access, atomic prompt decomposition, compiled-code orchestration, internal resource accounting, and the digital virtual economy are mechanisms that support the architecture. They are not independent evidence of capability or alignment.

Formal Integration

The formal models in appendix-formal-models.md give the suite its shared semantics. Model 1 treats improvement as a staged empirical acceptance predicate over candidate modifications, evidence packages, hard invariants, benchmark sufficiency, AAF non-veto where required, rollback or mitigation, provenance, cost/benefit reporting, and protected-set non-regression. Its population update is a Promote(pi_t, delta) operator, not simple accumulation.

Model 2 treats cognition as task-conditioned workflow composition. A cognitive workflow amplifies capability only when capability gain exceeds integration cost, interfaces are compatible, reliability clears the task threshold, and constraints hold. The model explicitly allows sub-additivity: more agents can reduce net capability when coordination cost, contradiction, latency, or trust review outweigh their contribution.

Model 3 treats decision making as robust intervention selection under plausible model variation, Goodhart risk, causal-scope limits, evidence sufficiency, and escalation conditions. For high-stakes externally consequential recommendations, escalation imports the Thesis 5 AAF gate rather than remaining a generic checkbox.

Model 4 treats software change as accepted only when compilation, tests, semantic invariants, regression bounds, security policy, provenance, cost/benefit, deployment discipline, and Thesis 1/5 permission conditions hold. Its repair-pipeline recurrence is constrained by validator non-regression on a reference suite.

Model 5 treats alignment as scoped permission, not global safety. It formalizes trust scope, trust-estimate dimensions, AAF dissent aggregation, severe unresolved objection handling, the Friendship agent veto or escalation, and ADO reportability metrics. The AAF sketch remains a first-draft formalization, but it is no longer a black-box label.

Organizational Recursive Self-Improvement

appendix-organizational-recursive-self-improvement.md interprets the five theses as an AI-native R&D organization: Thesis 1 provides the improvement loop, Thesis 2 provides candidate-generation and cognitive-search functions, Thesis 3 provides pre-registration, experiment, and portfolio discipline, Thesis 4 provides executable implementation and validation machinery, and Thesis 5 supplies permission, dissent, containment, and human authority. This is an architecture claim, not an implementation claim. The separate the internal execution plan defines the live operating controls required before organizational RSI cycles may count as evidence: sandboxing, kill switch, frozen V_ref_0, pre-registration, external-evaluator sampling, model-family diversity, exploration-budget discipline, rate limits, and stop conditions.

Empirical Ceiling

The suite positions Consullo against current public ceilings rather than claiming to exceed them. Goedel-machine theory is the formal RSI ideal; Darwin Godel Machine-style systems are the current practical ceiling for empirical benchmark-driven self-improvement through code mutation and selection. SWE-bench and related coding-agent benchmarks are the relevant software substrate comparison class. CIRL, Constitutional AI, debate, scalable oversight, AI Control, and corrigibility work are the alignment comparison class.

Consullo's proposed contribution is to generalize the design space: from coding-only empirical self-improvement toward a governed architecture that also includes method memories, cognitive workflows, causal-decision procedures, software pipelines, trust estimates, AAF dissent, and alignment constraints. Generalizing the design space is not the same as validating the generalized system. Validation remains future work.

Falsification Discipline

The central falsification question remains: what evidence would show that Consullo is not a viable scaffold for governed recursive capability amplification?

The suite identifies several answer classes. The scaffold is weakened or falsified if accepted improvements repeatedly fail outside narrow benchmarks; validators are gamed faster than they improve; cost per accepted improvement exceeds capability gain; recursive changes increase opacity, fragility, rollback difficulty, or incident rate; AAF objections are preserved but routinely bypassed; high-stakes externally consequential actions proceed without scoped permission; learned subsystems show sandbagging or deceptive behavior that controls cannot detect; or capability claims cannot be tied to implementation status and benchmark evidence.

The strongest governance falsifier is alignment becoming decorative. The strongest capability falsifier is benchmark-local improvement failing to transfer to deployment. The strongest recursive-improvement falsifier is validator or evaluator degradation under the pressure of optimizing the improvement loop itself.

Deepest Open Problems

The owner-as-final-AAF-adjudicator tension is the deepest open problem in single-owner Phase 1. The AAF is meant to surface blind spots, but unresolved conflict ultimately escalates to the owner unless external review is available. Preserved dissent, override tracking, contractor review, and future escrow-style review can reduce the problem; they do not eliminate it.

Other open research questions remain load-bearing. The scoped-trust-to-permission mapping needs empirical calibration. The AAF mechanism needs implementation evidence and critique-source diversity beyond one model family or prompt culture. ADO measurement needs durable metrics and a real reporting cadence. Validator monotonicity under recursive repair needs held-out reference suites and adversarial tests. Cognitive workflow composition needs measured task-conditioned operators, not agent-count optimism. The publication-pre-engagement pass for Soar, ACT-R, CLARION, LIDA, and Pearl's Causality now supports the current Model 2 and Model 3 framing while keeping both specified/proposed until benchmark and implementation evidence exists. All five theses now have benchmark or test-plan appendices; these appendices share an intentional design-contract structure, populate benchmark_result evidence-ledger payloads, and specify non-claim boundaries rather than reporting benchmark results. They should be revised in concert when the evidence-ledger schema, Capability Status discipline, or implementation-evidence map changes.

Final Position

The five-thesis suite is now a defensible first-complete draft structure: modular enough to compose separately, coherent enough to share a common master frame, and cautious enough to avoid treating specification as evidence. Its value is not that it proves Consullo will reach greater-than-human capability. Its value is that it states what such a pathway would require: measurable improvement, compositional cognition, causal-decision discipline, executable software modification, and alignment constraints that bind the loop rather than decorate it.

The next phase is pre-external-review finalization: rebuild and owner-verify the withheld implementation-evidence appendix before any future publication, keep the current Capability Status versus external-threshold distinction in vocabulary rather than adding a separate safety-threshold appendix prematurely, and keep expanding risks-and-criticisms.md as the strongest objections sharpen.
